If you intend to use images from iPhoto, Aperture or Lightroom libraries, take a look at the preference pane first and make sure the corresponding libraries are activated.
HoudahGeo directly accesses several proprietary libraries, such as iPhoto, Aperture and Lightroom. It is the only geotagging application I know that writes back directly into iPhoto-managed image files and the iPhoto library.
