This may be a little off topic, but as it took me some hours to work it out and as I could find very few helpful resources describing the procedure, here is how I converted my archived Lotus Notes calendars to iCal. As Google is renowned for visionary solutions and as the program very much mirrors the functionality of iPhoto, it is worth having a closer look at its geotagging capacity. At first glance, it looks very well integrated, but – as with our previous posts – we are looking for a proper workflow support and future-proof metadata handling.

I had thought that this was a thing of the past, a dreaded “standard procedure” from when I was a Windows user. The non-destructive editing paradigm that came with it is so common now that it seems strange that there ever was a time when you had to keep physical copies of both the master image and each edit (like a BW or touched-up version). Even though serious Photographers will prefer Aperture or Lightroom, iPhoto is very popular and has its merits in terms of usability. And its geotagging feature called “Places” has made a notable appearance when released with iLife ’09 recently. Does it do a good job, though?
